Bush pushes for easier spying at home

US President George W. Bush is proposing a new law which allows local and state police to spy on American citizens with no evidence.

The law proposed by the Department of Justice would permit local and state cops to gather intelligence on police suspicion, not evidence, keep it secret for up to 10 years, and share it with the federal government.

The draft has mounted fears among American activists as it gives the US police the go-ahead to stake out antiwar groups or people who the cops might deem as threats.

The police will be free to use public records, the Internet, undercover surveillance and other techniques to spy on threat groups and listen in on Americans' communications, even when no crime has been committed and the likelihood of a crime is low.

The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) criticized the proposal by the Department of Justice, saying the US state police have already launched spying programs against those opposing the Iraq war.

The Bush-proposed law gives local police the authority to violate the constitutional rights of thousands of Americans.

“The federal government has increasingly encouraged state non-enforcement agencies to become basically intelligence gatherers and we have seen problems as a result,” Mike German, an ACLU lawyer, told Press TV.

Referring to the use of undercover agents against peace activists in California and protest groups in New York, Colorado and most recently in Maryland, German said, “It's indicative of what happens when we start playing not by the rules."

The new Justice Department/FBI guidelines for police operations supposedly contain procedures to protect people's constitutional rights.

But critics say the history of rights enforcement by the Justice Department over local law enforcement has been less than stringent and abuses are likely to happen.

Some members of the Congress have called the new rules troubling, but the White House which gives only $2 billion to local law enforcement is eager now to lift restrictions on local police to spy on whomever they 'think' is acting suspiciously.

Well, the terrorists want to kill us for our freedoms.

We best get rid of all of them, so that way when they get here, there won't be any left for them!

I'd love to see the dissapointed looks on their faces when they get here...

    "I'm here for your freedom!"
    "Sorry... all out"
    "wha? NOOO!"

Condi Rice is an expert on Soviet Russia.

I think they are using her for advice on how to make us more Stalinist.

Be afraid-be very afraid when your basic liberties & freedoms that are country was founded on & has defended for over 230 years are slowly being revoked, because seldom are these losses ever regained. Our gov't has been strategically dismantling laws & strengthening certain powers that move us closer to a police state with increased monitoring of its own citizens.

Anybody concerned about his or her civil & constitutional rights should be worried, as it's becoming increasing obvious that anyone could be considered a potential threat to our national security, automatically becoming a suspect. Are we still considered innocent until proven guilty, & if so, for how much longer? Big brother truly is watching & it feels creepy because of the potential for abuse of these new super hero powers.

Police State Police State Fascism Fascism FA FA FA!!!!The war and the paranoid suspicion of ''global terrorism'' is just a ploy to establish a police state, all of the events preceding this decision were strategic, um who said it?, Benjamin Franklin? They who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety, deserve neither liberty nor safety. people are being duped into giving up their freedom because they have been convinced that ''terrorists'' are among us, the first terrorist was a Neanderthal who hit his friend over the head with a club because he took his food, there will always be terrorism on a global a civil and a social scale, this is just the kind of world we live in, there's no need to hand over our Rights on a platter, we're just asking for trouble....Oh, those protesters against the war in California were arrested? So now we can't even have an opinion? this is bad very bad, Police State Police State Fascism Fascism Fa Fa FA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OK people you have no clue what is to happen. Ive been around not long but long anough to notice the truth of what is really going on behind the curtain. The government isnt what u think it is. We arent giving our rights up, the government is simply just taking them away as quietly as possible, and talking to congress isnt going to do jack shit, because if u remember like me, a shit ton of people got fired from all the legislative branches, and replaced with pro fuckin suck bushes ass people, by bush, so what makes u think they give a shit about what u have to say or think, they've been collecting data on our citizens for awhile and they are figuring out who is pro war and who is anti war. Those who are anti war will be locked away when bush declares martial law, which they have already been practicing in st louis 2 years prior, and a marine lost his life because they didnt bother telling anybody they were doing search and seizures on peoples homes, they tried to disarm an unexpecting cop, so the cop shot the marine. The anti war people will be locked away in all the previous military bases now prisons (concentration camps) and im sure no more than half of the anti war people will be willing to fight back with violence and killing, so they will merely be the jews of this current holocaust. Thus leaving pro war-manifest destiny people left to support bush, on his journey to seize all the resources and try to make a single tyrant ruling government, but hopefully the world will do what they can to stop him, if they wish too.

But if u really wanna do something about this, i would say stop fileing for fucking federal income tax, becuase it really isnt against the law not to, its actually against our rights, i know people who havent filed for it since 1999, and they're not in any legal trouble, stop paying for gas, cuz ur only funding the war your against, and go on a global strike until your demands are met, because it is us, the middle class that gives this country the power, not the top 5% that have 80% of the nations money, but of course this is not possible if we dont act like a whole, because divided we fall, so yeah little hope on that, because bush is doing a pretty good job at dividing us up on lies, and im talking about innocent people in the middle east who now hate us because we've blown up they're entire families so hell yeah i'd want to shoot some people up who took the most precious things away in this world (human life) WHICH NO ONE HAS THE RIGHT TO TAKE AWAY, but after turmoil and supposed terrorrism makes you lose your morales, so you just dont give a fuck about shit. Which is what they want, and seem to be getting, cuz all we are doing is bitching and not doing, but if you want to, do what i listed above, because that is what they dont want, and that is why they are doing all this spying and striping of rights, leaving us with no dignity FUCKING SICK

Wasnt a president gotten rid of because he was spying without anyone having anything but personal reasons for it? Something is not right with this law or proposed law. All of a sudden no American will have any privacy. First step to a police state! Second they take away all the guns for american protection and then lock up and torture anyone that goes aganist them. Not good-Not good at all! whactel

This is absolutely ridiculous. It's time that we start respecting the privacy of our neighbors. That's why I support Bob Barr - the Libertarian Party candidate for President. Yes, his past record isn't all that spotless. Yes, he's done a 180 (or a 178 according to Bob) degree turn from where he used to stand on some issues. He's only human. But did you know that the Libertarian Party actually recruited this guy because he was so Libertarian on the 4th amendment, but not so much on others? The LP got Bob to rethink his position on other issues and eventually won him over. People are allowed to change their positions and admit that their previous stance was wrong. Bob did, and instead of berating him for it, I think we should all applaud his decision and prod other politicians to do the same. Now THAT is CHANGE.

1984?? Did they need these laws to do this back in the 90s?? I wonder why they feel the need to pass such laws when they are already doing this and have given immunity to the companies involved.
