New research from the University of Sheffield, UK, suggests that, for men, having two or more wives means that you live longer than if you stick to only one.

They compared men over the age of 60 across 140 different countries, and found that those in countries that practice polygamy lived on average 12% longer than those from largely monogamous nations.

I just plant the seeds...

I'm sure it's got something to do with being able to take a break from each other for a while: the stresses caused by the pressure of having to concentrate on one person for your whole life must build up (so I've read).

I saw a special on History Channel that said the First Emperor of China (dude that had the great wall built) believed in this too. He was on a mission to "live forever" and his health advisors told him having as many wives as possible was one of the ways of extending his life. Hah.

Well this is interesting, After having one wife and now a
fiancee I can't see to many women going for that unless they are pre-brainwashed.

Correlation does not equal causation. Just because men in countries that practice polygamy live longer doesn't mean that polygamy causes men to live longer. There are other variables that need to be considered.

Wouldn't the competition with the other wife and oddness of the relationship add stress to the womans life, leading to a shorter life?
It seems a little odd to me.

Maybe women would live longer if they had more than one husband.

"Correlation does not equal causation." agreed mypsychotic.

Cultures which practice polygamy probably practice other different lifestyle habits, eating healthier food, remaining more active. More research should and most likely will be done.

I believe that the men lived longer but I would expect that the women would have shorter life spans. I know I would kill any ho who tried to get with my man.

    What about polyandry or polyamory?

And also aggreed, "Correlation does not equal causation."

Here's a theory: It's G-D'S punishment! A man with two wives will suffer even longer! It ain't natural. Get out whilst you still can!

variables indeed . the cardiovascular benefits of lots of sex are undeniable , but it doesn't matter if you have a few hundred wives if you're not hittin it regularly - like any workout .

I reckon that competition between males to get more than one wife - seeing that the proportion of males to females is close to 50/50 - might considerably shorten quite a few male lives.

    It's worth a try!

As William James wrote after a revelatory dream:

    Hogamus, higamous Man is polygamous
    Higamus, hogamous Woman monogamous.

...maybe he was on to something....

What about polyandry or polyamory? The same should be true of them as well.

There should be no reason for there to be any potential difference if you are talking about multiple wives, multiple husbands or both.

They should reverse this for China where women have more than one husband....considering....

And the true question is are they happy? Because if they are not they are just living a long sad life and how is that better?

@J_Jammer, yep... it's like the OLD joke...

please don't give the Mormons more ideas.....many still believe that polygamy should be legal again.

I think they should make all kinship family ties legal, two husbands with two wives, one husband with three wives, one wife with three husbands, or a whole tribe of people if that is what they want.

If families want to become corporations with the adult members as the board of directors and all members, including the children, stockholders, then they should be legal too.

I say let families be what they want and need to be. What is blood anyway when it comes to bonding and family? Blood relatives can more easily stab you in the back and steal from you as a stranger can, because with family you aren't expecting it to happen, whereas with a stranger, there is always that idea in the back, maybe way back of your mind that this stranger could mean me harm.

Enough with the binary, black and white, man and woman, left and right, good and evil thinking. Life is a rainbow of colors and shades of gray.

Long Life? Name me a civilization, if one exists today, that has survived based on this morality? It may extend the life of the individual, but the life span of society will decay. But hey, today, we live in a world where we look after number one, when individual rights supercede the greater good. We have made ourselves little-Gods, and for this reason Lucifer was cast down like a bolt of lightening.

PS to all you Christians out there, Jesus said there ain't going to be any marriage in Heaven, that is why the contract reads "until death do you part." And that is exactly what marriage is, a contract.

People should be allowed to make any contract they want with another human being so long as it is mutually consensual.
