The UK has become the sixth largest net importer of water in the world, the environment group WWF will tell a meeting of international experts in Stockholm, with every consumer indirectly responsible for the use of thousands of litres a day. Only 38% of the UK's total water use comes from its own resources; the rest depends on the water systems of other countries, some of which are already facing serious shortages.

4,645 litres a day?!? That is astonishing. I try to do my best to conserve water (not showering... doing laundry... etc. teeheee) but I rarely think about how much water it takes for food and clothes! All the more reason to buy and eat locally grown foods and run around naked!

Wow I had no idea. I always thought we'd be fine because we get so much rain!! I was obviously wrong. I pledge to change my ways!

We live in one of the wettest countries so it isn't a surprise that it doesn't register. We should take a leaf out of Australia's book, the way they conserve water and recycle bath and shower water should be encouraged.

That and our decaying victorian pipe systems should be replaced so that we aren't wasting millions of litres each year.

Outstanding Pod from London-based Finnish filmmaker Paulina Tervod. Things that she did during the experiment included not showering, recycling her dish water and using all water used in cooking to flush the toilet!

Hey whats done is done, the important thing to think about now is what can YOU do right now and what plans can you make personally, in order to help change things for the better?

Negativity and blaming wont help, but YOU can help.
Its not radical or survivalist or wierd to grow your own food or to conserve water and energy, (just as it is no longer unfashionable to buy your clothes in charity shops, nowadays its cool because its "recycling")

My personal plans are these: I am doing everything I can to save water and energy and reduce waste of all kinds in my own home.
I am in the process of applying for a grant to help to put in a Ground Source heat pump so that I can produce my own sustainable energy, you can do it too! see http://www.energysavingtrust.org.uk
I have purchased a greenhouse and am currently researching ways to use my old bathwater to irrigate the greenhouse and some raised garden beds for producing my own organic food. with a relatively small investment I can not only save myself a LOT of money but I can also help to improve things in my own small way and more importantly set an example for others to copy
THIS is our future it is time to embrace it!
do some research! Find out what YOU can do!

Centuries ago, the English used to drink beer instead of water (even the children) because it was safer. Plenty of English people are still upholding this tradition, and I commend them for trying to save the water supply.

    Ok, this is really shocking.

Does anyone know how much hidden water is involved in getting one kilogram of soy?
1 kg of beef is 15500 according to http://current.com/items/89219474_the_hidden_cost_of_your_food_and_drink

that's really much. I see the problem.. and I know what consequences are for countries like Brazil.. but what can we do besides drinking Brazilian coffee?

Solar powered desalinization will be the next thing. Then maybe we will quit using the oceans as our cess pools.
