In July, Hulu's traffic grew to 105 million streams per month, and the site leapfrogged several competitors to become eighth most popular vide site. Not bad for a site that’s only been live for five months.
What's really amazing about Hulu, though, is that, at least in one respect, it';s close to overtaking YouTube.
While Hulu only has about 2% of YouTube's traffic, it can and does put advertising on all of its videos.
YouTube, on the other hand, can only put ads on a tiny fraction of its content. According to YouTube sales manager Brian Cusack, YouTube is able to sell ads against less than 3% of the total videos on the site.
So, while Hulu is a long way from overtaking YouTube's traffic, it's already close to beating YouTube in the number of video streams that it can actually make money on.
This trend is likely to have a huge long-term effect on video sites and the future of user-generated video.

Um, maybe a more specific headline then? Yours is almost totally misleading...
-
But Hulu is tv and movies and youtube is content created by users... with crappy video most of the time.

I like Hulu, in concept, but I'm on a rural DSL connection that's just a hair too slow. They don't let their video streams buffer for very long, so watching on Hulu isn't really an option for me; it hangs up too frequently. I e-mailed their support with questions about this, and their response essentially said "too bad"; their buffers are short for "security" reasons and they don't plan on making slower streaming speeds available.
I still like the idea, though. They're starting to make some content available. They're waking up to a new millennium.

Total streams:
Youtube: 5,024,249
Hulu: 105,830Unique Viewers:
Youtube: 77,838
Hulu: 3,293The title should read: "Hulu Gaining Ground on Youtube".

I like Hulu but it's a different market and a lot easier to make money off of old TV and movies.
YouTube is more for user-generated video so it's much harder to build an audience for it and generate ads from it since they have to be very good like HotForWords or HappySlip.
So it's more apples and oranges since YouTube doesn't have the proven business model that Hulu does.

They both rule on youtube.
At least at hulu you get fast streaming videos. You don't have to wait 2 hours for youku, or tudku to buffer. -
I don't know kind of connection, amount of RAM or video card you have but I never have to wait for either of them to buffer so that's not really a factor

Screw Youtube Hulu rocks. Nothing is better than knowing I can watch all three seasons of It's always Sunny In Philadelphia for free whenever I want. I'd trade every single youtube clip for thirty seconds of "Day man."

Youtube and Hulu are two different things. One is user generated content - the other is legal TV show and movie streaming. Their both video streaming websites but its almost wrong to put them in the same category.
-
The title is really misleading. I was getting really excited as I had never heard of Hulu before, but it turns out it is not really an alternative to YouTube ...

Thats because Hulu is made up of real content.......not fat kids pretending to sing, grown men wearing tron outfits, and babies laughing.

HU?

You're confusing "real" with studio produced and that's not always the same thing.
At least most of what's on YouTube is original and the point being that it does give everybody a chance to participate and that's what make it different from Hulu.
The difference between a passive site where you just watch the videos and an interactive one where you can participate is why it's not really fair to compare them since it's a whole different strategy for each.
It's the difference between the experience of being in the audience for a play and being on the stage so that you can't really compared the two.

I really like Hulu.
I don't like YouTube as much, but it is incredibly useful for sharing video clips with specific people.
YouTube is great if you are making a video for someone specific (like a short film of a vacation that friends and family can watch) but just as a websurfer it doesn't offer much content. In fact YouTube is the epitome of 99 channels and nothing on.
Wanna share a 5min clip of your kids 2nd birthday with friends? YouTube rocks!
Looking for quality content that appeals to a braod audience? Hulu is the winner!
The idea of giving everyone their own channel to make their own shows seems awesome on paper -- but the actual results were a little sketchy. Best (imho) to leave writing to the writers.

Here's a title:
Is YouTube the new MySpace?
-
I'm not interested in checking out Hulu.
It's almost like the poster thinks we've been wishing for more ads or something.
Hulu will level off in its growth. I doubt it'll have the longevity YouTube will enjoy.

It is always exciting to find a new, amazing internet video site, no matter what the specific market.
