Cross in the sand: John McCain caught lying in church?
John McCain won major points on Saturday for his story about a North Vietnamese prison guard drawing a cross in the dirt, but the tale has bloggers crying foul. Apparently the details of the story have changed over the years, and lately they bear more than a passing resemblance to the memories of the late Russian novelist and gulag survivor Alexander Solzhenitsyn.
McCain has written about his POW experience at length, and yet, this story about the the guard putting the cross in the sand is a recent phenomenon. When did he start telling this story? I wonder if it ever happened. It is starting to sound like it's like Hillary's landing under sniper fire story: a complete fantasy.
McCain's "Cross in the sand" lie
Was I the only one who was disgusted with McCain's little POW story in which he recounted how one of his guards painted a cross in the sand and "for a moment, it was just two christians worshipping"?
It's a nice little treat, which possibly drove quite a few to tears, McCain included (at least he looked like he was teary eyed). But looking at it more realistically, McCain once again used a public forum to distort his POW experience.
To my understanding, the "Cross in the sand" story doesn't didn't happen at the Hanoi Hilton. It is fictional, a copycat from Alexander Solzhenitsyn's book "The Gulag Archipelago". McCain often stated that he admired Solzhenitsyn, so it's a strong possibility that he has read the book.
An eerily similary story from Alexander Solzhenitsyn from his times in the Soviet Gulags:
"Along with other prisoners, he worked in the fields day after day, in rain and sun, during summer and winter. His life appeared to be nothing more than backbreaking labor and slow starvation. The intense suffering reduced him to a state of despair.
On one particular day, the hopelessness of his situation became too much for him. He saw no reason to continue his struggle, no reason to keep on living. His life made no difference in the world. So he gave up.
Leaving his shovel on the ground, he slowly walked to a crude bench and sat down. He knew that at any moment a guard would order him to stand up, and when he failed to respond, the guard would beat him to death, probably with his own shovel. He had seen it happen to other prisoners.
As he waited, head down, he felt a presence. Slowly he looked up and saw a skinny old prisoner squat down beside him. The man said nothing. Instead, he used a stick to trace in the dirt the sign of the Cross. The man then got back up and returned to his work.
As Solzhenitsyn stared at the Cross drawn in the dirt his entire perspective changed. He knew he was only one man against the all-powerful Soviet empire. Yet he knew there was something greater than the evil he saw in the prison camp, something greater than the Soviet Union. He knew that hope for all people was represented by that simple Cross. Through the power of the Cross, anything was possible.
Solzhenitsyn slowly rose to his feet, picked up his shovel, and went back to work. Outwardly, nothing had changed. Inside, he had received hope."

Black bear steals hubcap from car
A black bear stole a hubcap from a car in a safari park and then proceeded to offer it to a woman driver.
Azra Noonari, 39, who had had her own hubcaps stolen at home in Luton, Beds, just weeks beforehand, was shocked when the bizarre incident took place in a Bedfordshire park.
"I was driving us to the bear and wolf area when I saw a car stopped right in front of me," she said. "There was a bear in front of it, so I stopped too and started taking pictures. I saw it take a hubcap off the car then start walking towards us. I locked all the doors quickly, we didn't know what it would do. It put the hubcap down and then banged on the window, as if it was trying to get my attention. It was almost like it wanted to give me the wheel cap."

Australian plea for 'ugly' women
The mayor of a remote Australian mining town has come under fire after saying that female "ugly ducklings" might benefit from its shortage of women.
John Molony told a newspaper last week that "with five blokes to every girl, may I suggest that beauty-disadvantaged women should proceed to Mount Isa".
The council has since been swamped with complaints from both men and women.
But Mr Molony has refused to apologise for the remarks, saying he was "telling it like it is" in the Queensland town.
Located 1,829km (1,136 miles) from Brisbane, Mount Isa is home to one of the world's biggest underground mines.
In 2006, there were just 819 women aged 20-24 living there out of a total population of 21,421, according to the most recent census.
'Lonely women'
In an interview with the Townsville Bulletin last week, Mr Molony proposed a novel solution to Mount Isa's shortage of eligible women.
"Quite often you will see walking down the street a lass who is not so attractive with a wide smile on her face. Whether it is recollection of something previous or anticipation for the next evening, there is a degree of happiness," he said.
"Some, in other places in Australia, need to proceed to Mount Isa where happiness awaits. Really, beauty is only skin deep. Isn't there a fairy tale about an ugly duckling that evolves into a beautiful swan," he added.
A fellow councillor, Jean Ferris, said the invitation to "beauty-disadvantaged women" had caused consternation among both sexes.
"It's an absolute disgrace," she told the Courier Mail. "It's not council's view and it's not mine. It's hard when you've got to defend something someone else has said. We're definitely appalled."
Mr Molony has since refused to retract his remarks and insisted he is "a bloke who respects women".
"I believe we should look after women," he said. "I'm told men outnumber women here by five to one. If that's the case, then perhaps it's an opportunity for some lonely women."
